Dyslexia Screening Training
The Catholic College of Mandeville (CCM) in an effort to address the needs of individuals with dyslexia will be offering training to educators and parents in partnership with the Dyslexia Training Institute located in San Diego, California.
As at 2016 Jamaica’s adult literacy rate was 87%; the average for the Caribbean is 92%. It has been noted by some educators that dyslexia is the most prevalent learning disability in Jamaica. Dyslexia is a learning disability that can cause problems with reading, writing and learning.
Children and adults with dyslexia are often not identified and/or do not receive the appropriate remediation they need to learn to read, write and spell despite the fact that they have intellectual capacity to learn.
This course is designed to address these shortcomings and equip educators with the requisite knowledge and expertise as it relates to dyslexia screening.
The programme begins March 19, 2018.
This program consists of two components:
- 3 days of face-to-face classes,
- 6 weeks of online classes
Participants in the course will first be given an in depth look at dyslexia, building core knowledge on the condition as well as how to conduct formal and informal assessments to assess dyslexia. Subsequent classes will examine meeting the needs of students and what strategies to employ in doing so. These classes will also equip participants with correct and efficient teaching strategies for dyslexic students.
